Since 2008 we have been partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service to assist member campuses in increasing the number of faculty and students making a difference through volunteer service and service-learning.
For the 2014 service year our AmeriCorps VISTA Program has a new focus. Our VISTA Program will mobilize higher education resources to build the capacity of a key community based partner that serves low-income people. Through work with a campus and its designated partner agency, VISTA members address priority community needs in 1 of 3 focus areas:
- Economic Opportunity – projects should address job placement services, with a focus on low income individuals receiving job training and other skill development services and/or job placement services; or increase access to services and benefits that enhance financial literacy.
- Education – projects should focus on K-12 success or post-secondary success. Projects that focus on K-12 success should seek to improve educational and behavioral outcomes for students in low-achieving elementary, middle, and high schools.
- Healthy Futures – projects should focus on access to health care. Projects should be connecting economically disadvantaged individuals to preventative and primary health care services. Projects could also focus food security, with the goal of improving access to nutritious food among low income individuals and communities.
