Diocesan Synod – In a year or two

This past weekend at Memorial High in Sydney Mines, about two hundred and fifty clergy and laity gathered to discuss the current state of the church and the diocese. Guest speaker was Paul Lakeland, Chair of the Centre for Catholic Studies at Fairfield University, Fairfield, Connecticut. Lakeland is the author of The Liberation of the Laity: In Search of an Accountable Church (Continuum International, New York, N.Y., 2003). As a result of the discussion, Bishop Brian Dunn has agreed to convene a Synod of the Diocese – a gathering of clergy and laity- within the next year or two- to pursue a new direction for the church in the area following the devastation caused by the sex abuse scandals and the criminal charges against the former bishop, Raymond Lahey.
