Cold snaps can break stuff

The numbing cold is especially hard on plastics, experts say, because at low temperatures they become brittle and lose their ability to absorb even modest punishment. “The bottom line is that the bonds between the atoms are not as flexible, and you put a little pressure on them and they’ll tend to break,” said Jerry Sergent, chairman of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Fairfield University.
