Boone a general in King’s march for equality

And as their head coach, Herman Boone, watched his players walk off the field, he decided to do something drastic. He joined them. “That’s how I first met him,” Boone said the other day after presenting the keynote speech at the convocation for Fairfield University’s 2012 Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. “One day at practice, my team just quietly walked off of the field. And I’m saying to myself, ‘Where in the hell are they going?’ They went downtown to join the demonstration to march for open housing, public accommodations … remember, everything was segregated. And I said to myself, ‘I’m not going to let a 15-year-old kid determine my right to be a man,’ so I went with them.”
