“The happiest people I have known have been those who gave themselves no concern about their own souls, but did their uttermost to mitigate the miseries of others.”
- Elizabeth Cady Stanton
I have been a Service Learning Associate for the past three semesters, starting off when the program was first introduced in the spring semester last year. I have truly enjoyed my time as a SLA and have come away with a better understanding of the people around me.
This past semester, I worked with Dr. Calderwood’s Exploration in Education class. Every Wednesday we would go to Cesar Batalla School in Bridgeport and work with first graders, helping them improve their literacy. Although at first I did not think the small amount of time I spent with the children had a great impact on them, I quickly realized that these young students were grateful to have thirty minutes of my attention. I really enjoyed working with the younger students; I always left Batalla with a smile and feeling of satisfaction.
