Stags Learn Valuable Lessons At Friends Of Athletics Career Night

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

On Thursday, October 13 the Friends of Fairfield Athletics, along with the University Career Planning Center and Alumni Office, hosted a Career Night at the Kelley Center.  The event featured 20 mentors – University alums and friends – and two 90 minutes sessions designed to help current student-athletes succeed in getting jobs.

“Tonight was very successful,” said senior men’s basketball player Sean Crawford.  “I learned a lot more about my resume and just networking and being able to get the word out and what opportunities might come from a little conversation.”

The first session of the evening concentrated on resume building and putting the best foot forward in a resume.  The second session was geared towards interview skills, with mentors sharing tips on questions that might be asked and how important demeanor and appearance can be.  Both sessions concluded with a networking period, where student-athletes and mentors were able to get to know each other better.

The key to the success of the night was the dedication of the Friends of Athletics in taking time out of their professional and personal schedules to come back to campus and spend time sharing their wisdom.

“It’s really great that they come back,” senior field hockey player Marit Westenberg said.  “It is great to have connections like this and I would love to give it back when I am a graduate.”

The Career Planning Center and Friends of Athletics has numerous such events planned for the remainder of the academic year.  Any alumni that are interested in being part of a future event should contact Julie Tuozzoli (email).
