On a sunny 60 degree afternoon, the #13 ranked Fairfield Stags lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes by a 8-3 score. The Stags are now 11-3 for the season and finished with a 4-2 ECAC League record while Ohio State improved to 8-6 overall record and 5-1 in ECAC League play.
The game started off well for the Stags with freshman Colin McLinden scoring unassisted at the 11:11 mark of the first period. Senior John Snellman put the Stags up 2-0 with an assist from fellow senior Brent Adams with 7:38 showing on the first period clock. OSU cut the lead in half at the 5:30 mark of the first period with an unassisted goal. The Buckeyes tie the score at 2-2 at the 4:27 mark of the first period with an assist goal. OSU goes up with an unassisted goal with 3:28 showing on the first period clock.
The second period started with a quick goal by the Buckeyes on a man up opportunity at 14:18 for a 4-2 score on an assisted goal. The Buckeyes make it a 5-2 game with assisted goal at the 7:38 mark of the period. Ohio State made it a 6-2 halftime score by scoring an assisted goal at the 2:23 mark of the first half.
The third period saw the Stags shut out again by the Buckeyes defense. An unassisted goal was scored by the Buckeyes right off the face off with 18 seconds coming off the clock. Two minutes later the Buckeyes scored an assisted goal to make it a 8-2 ballgame.
The fourth quarter saw no scoring by either team until senior Sully Smith scored his first goal of the year with 3 seconds left on the clock for a final score of 8-3.
Ohio State outshot the Stags by a 31-24 margin. Fairfield’s goalkeeper Charlie Cipriano made 13 saves and was credited with one caused turnover and four ground balls while the OSU’s goalkeeper Greg Dutton had 11 saves and scooped up four ground balls. Fairfield won the ground ball battle 22 to 21 and OSU had 15 turnovers versus 14 turnovers for the Stags. Ohio State converted the one extra man opportunity it had on the day while the Stags went 0 for 3 on extra man opportunities. OSU won the face off battle by taking 9 of 15 chances. Michael Roe was four of 11 at the face off X and Marshall Johnson won 2 of 4 face off chances.
The Stags and Buckeyes will meet again in the ECAC League semi-finals on Wednesday night at 10 PM on the campus of the University of Denver. Ohio State will be the #2 seed in the tournament while Fairfield will be the #3 seed. Roger Yergeau ’73
