DOBO Diaries! Red Sea Madness Edition

Blog Note: Kelly Romano and Kyle Koncz are the Directors of Basketball Operations for the Fairfield basketball programs. They will partner to bring you DOBO Diaries throughout the year – sharing with you some insights into the behind the scenes work that goes into making a Division I basketball program run.

Hello all!

Monday was a great day for me. Not only was it our first Monday practice of the season (practice started over the weekend), it was also the first Monday I could wake up tasting a Cleveland Browns victory! For a native Clevelander when the Browns win it feels something like a national holiday. This victory was even sweeter as it came against our rivals from the south of the state, the Bengals, and it guaranteed we wouldn’t go 0-16 on the season! Baby steps and building blocks, work with me here!

The other exciting event that happened this weekend was what has become the official annual start to the college basketball season all across the country, Midnight Madness, which at Fairfield we call Red Sea Madness. Friday night in Alumni Hall both the Men’s and Women’s team joined with the Red Sea, the Stags 6th Man, for an hour of fun and games.

It started of with the introduction of both teams. It was great to see each players own signature entrance as they came out. My personal favorite was the Stag’s junior forward Keith Matthews superman pose. He might be able to give the terminator himself Arnold Schwarzenegger a run for that 1970 Mr. Olympia title!

Next on the list of events was a three-point contest and hot-shot competition. Freshman guard Justin Jenkins was able to overcome the nerves performing in front of the Red Sea for the first time to make it championship, but he was unable to string together enough makes to pull off the victory. In the Stags vs. Students Hot Shot competition our very own student manager Brandon Bubba had his hopes and dreams crushed by a Desmond Wade’s half court buzzer beater! There goes his opportunity to trash talk everyday in practice this season, sorry Brandon. Maybe Des will give you a rematch sometime this year.

The night concluded with a fantastic dunk contest. While all the participants put on a great show, it was freshman Marcus Gilbert who stole the spotlight. The lanky Gilbert threw down two SportsCenter Top 10 worthy dunks on the way to the title. Not only can he threw the hammer down, but his ability to seemingly hang in the air allows for some great photos.

Red Sea Madness was a great way to kick off the season and our guys definitely enjoyed the night. It allowed them to be a little loose and have some fun with the crowd. Even Coach Johnson got into the action, stirring up the Red Sea with an electric boogie down at midcourt! Just trust me, it happened.

Both programs really appreciated the strong showing and support of the student body, and we can’t wait to see the 6th Man rattle our opponents at all our games this year!

Until next time,

Kyle – Go Stags!!!

Blog Note: Max Buchanan and Marshall Johnson, members of the men’s lacrosse team, will be pairing up throughout the season to give you a view from their eyes.

Well this week marks the last week of practice until the spring comes.  Fall ball has been a bit of a roller coaster.  We’ve had some fun days and some days that divided the men from the boys, but it’s all been good progress on our way to getting better.

Since this is a “game week” practice started off especially tough today.  About halfway through, however, the mood was lightened a bit when junior defensemen Greg Perraut was formally introduced to freshman defensemen Rob Popdan who basically gave Greg a big bear hug.  I’ve seen girls hit harder, but it was nice to see that Rob is a little bit tougher than we thought.  It was all good competition though.  No hate between the two, just a desire to win.

This weekend promises to be a fun one with all our alumni coming back to play and spend the weekend here in Fairfield.  Our very own MLL champion Brent Adams will be back to showcase his professional talent.  Most of our parents will be making appearances as well to get a taste of what this season will bring.  Hopefully this formal “red/white” scrimmage will live up to all the hype that it has been getting.

Next Monday is the start of the final winter conditioning for me and the rest of the senior class.  I don’t think we can say we’ll miss it, but it’s necessary evil in order for us to be in the best shape as possible come January.  That being said, my partner in crime Maxwell Buchanan will be joining the fat boy club for the second season in row.  Max and the rest of the fat boys will be getting in tip top shape over the next 6 weeks.

All that being said, we are going to do our best to have a great week of practice, so we can impress the fans on Saturday morning.  Hope to see you all out there.

Yours truly,

Marshall

The Special K Debut!

Hello readers,

My name is Kristen Filicia and I would like to finally introduce myself along with my partner, Kimi Kurata, to Stag Tracks and its followers. Kimi and I are both juniors on the softball team who have become Stags all the way from California. We are special in more ways than one and will refer to ourselves throughout the year as Special K. We will do our best to post blogs about the softball team if and when we find time away from our many practicesand workouts. #FUSBonDemand

The Stag softball team has a short window of time where weekends are free of softball and Tis’ the season so what better way to celebrate then a little apple picking.

On Sunday the team carpooled up to the Beardsley’s Cider Mill & Orchard located in Shelton, Conn. There were hundreds of apples, but only a few were ready to be picked. It was picking time for Winesap, Braeburn and Fuji apples, but this didn’t stop us from exploring the whole orchard. We selected a few of our favorites and then went into the Farm Bakery to enjoy some apple donuts and cider.

Apple picking was a delicious success and a first timer for many of us. All the apples we ate seemed to benefit us at our 6:45 a.m strength and conditioning session this morning, as we all survived the lift and passed our sprint test.

Until next time … Go Stags!

It’s great to be back in the water and racing again!! We had our first meet of the season last weekend against Boston College. It came down to a close finish between the two teams. Even though BC ended up pulling ahead, we were excited with how we all swam. We had some very exciting races that got us enthusiastic for the rest of our season.  This coming weekend, we are heading up to Holy Cross for our second meet where we hope to have even more AMAZING races and get our first win under our belt!

Even though our meets have started, we are still continuing to do double practices every day and we are adding weightlifting into our schedule next week. But, when you swim well at the meets, it makes it a little easier to get up at 5:30am because you can see all of your hard work beginning to pay off!

Aside from swimming, the entire team has been active in the community as well. We are currently teaching swim lessons for three hours on Sundays every week. And, during the last weekend of September, our team participated in the JTB Heart Club Walk on campus. Just to give you a little background, the Club is a chapter of the John Taylor Babbitt Foundation, a non-profit established to prevent sudden cardiac death. The Foundation was named in honor John Taylor Babbitt who died at the age of 16 when his heart stopped during a basketball game at his church gym.

Anyway, the Walk began at noon and ended at 2pm, with a lunch and snacks. This leisurely walk was 2-miles around campus, passing all eight AEDs (automated external defibrillators) located here. More than 160 students participated and the Club raised about $2,000 dollars, which will help Fairfield purchase more AEDs for campus! The event was a great success and, hopefully, the Club will continue hosting this Walk every fall, raising more and more money to purchase AEDs for every building on campus.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Club, please contact me, Cacky Keating.

Well, that’s it for now! We hope to see you all at our next home meet, our MAAC opener against Manhattan College, on October 20th at 12pm!

Casey’s Corner

Blog note: Casey Heely is a freshman goalkeeper for the Fairfield field hockey team.

It’s been a bumpy ride since our venture to Michigan two weeks ago.  We have had six matchups, one being our first conference game of the season.

Two weekends ago, we shut out Holy Cross 4-0 in a great performance by the Stags. We then fell to Columbia 4-3 at their field, a tough loss. Unfortunately we then fell to our first conference opponent in double overtime. Although we lost the match, we competed with UNH for the majority of the game, with massive saves by Maddy Sposito, along with defensive saves by Michelle Loor and Nikki McLucas and a picture perfect goal by Lindsey Hatch assisted by Hillary Fitts. The game had many highlights, but we were unable to pull through with the desired result.

With hope to avenge this loss, we traveled to Rhode Island on Sunday to face Brown University. This match was particularly special for me because it was my first collegiate start, where I was given my first 70 minutes of hockey. I had missed being on the pitch, for in high school, I played essentially every minute of every game for four years, finishing with a heartbreaking loss in the Suffolk County championships in sudden death strokes. You could say I was itching to redeem myself from that game that still haunts my dreams. However, the first half was a definite reminder of how I am competing at a level superior to my previous experience. Within the first three minutes I was scored on, which was not easy to cope with. Then, before the end of the half I was scored upon two more times. I felt that I had worked so hard for this moment to prove that everything I had done since August 10th was worth it. But, as the sport goes, you don’t always get what you wish for.  My teammates were more than supportive; especially my fellow goalie Maddy [Sposito] and they all forced me to refocus on what I knew I could do. So for the second half, I was able to keep the ball out of the net. However, it was not enough, as we still fell 3 to 1.

Our assistant coach Joey [Civico] always tells us “it’s the next game that defines you.” I appreciatively got this chance a few days later when we faced Siena College, where I again started and played the entire game. It was an impressive turnout by the stags, with an 8-0 win—and my first shutout. Although I only had four saves, it was still a confidence boost from the tough Brown loss. It gave me the belief that as long as I put my mind to it, I can be the goalkeeper my team needs me to be.

After this game, we traveled eight hours up to the University of Maine where we competed in our second conference game. Another heartbreaking loss of 2-1 in overtime, with the Stags dominating the entire game, made for a rough trip home. Even from the sideline it was hard to bear. This Friday, we hope to come back from our two conference losses when we face America East opponent University of Albany on our home field at 3 PM.

DOBO Diaries – Celebrity Style!

Hello Stag Fans -

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to attend the 2012 ECAC Awards show and convention with my co-workers Head Softball Coach Julie Brzezinski and Athletic Communications lady Kelly McCarthy.  This year marks the 40th anniversary of Title IX, so the convention featured some influential women to speak in its honor.  The ECAC held their awards dinner on Sunday night at the marvelous Mystic Marriott where the dinner guests got to hear from award winners, both athletes and administrators.

My favorite award given on the night was the Award of Valor.  This is a special award given to an athlete who has been through trials and tribulations but still managed to have the strength to perform both academically and athletically.  One award winner that stuck in my mind battled his way through chemotherapy while continuing to play baseball and put up big numbers.  However, one at bat he fouled the ball off of his foot and since his body was comprised because of his treatments his foot broke.  The young man refused to give up, the NCAA granted him a year of eligibility so he rehabilitated himself back and was able to finish out his career successfully.

The next day we had a full schedule.  There were speakers all day and topics ranging from NCAA Compliance to how social media is changing sports today.  Since one of my responsibilities as DOBO is our Facebook page and Twitter account it was a great opportunity for me to hear a professional speak about sports and social media.

Following the social media lecture we were fortunate to hear from Donna Lopiano who has dedicated a great portion of her life to fighting for women’s rights in sports.  Personally, I do not think I stop and acknowledge the importance of Title IX and the impact it has had on the lives of females everywhere, but luckily I had two old birds (Julie and Kelly) with me to put things in perspective.

Kelly Romano with ESPN personality Linda Cohn at the ECAC Convention.

I learned a lot from all of the speakers at the convention but I would have to say my favorite part of the weekend was hearing legendary SportsCenter anchor Linda Cohn speak and getting the chance to meet her.  Linda shoots straight from the cuff and there is little-to-no filter, which I find very refreshing.  Linda told us a little about her story and what it was like being one of the only women to last in her job at the time.  One quote I took away from her was “Don’t be afraid to be yourself, don’t become a robot!”

The other quote I took away was when I introduced myself to her (with help from Kelly McCarthy) she said, and yes, this is a direct quote from Linda: “WOW, you’re famous!! I’m so excited to meet you!” I don’t know who she was mistaking me for but hey, I’ll take that compliment and run with it!

Thanks for reading,

Kelly

Blog Note: Max Buchanan and Marshall Johnson, members of the men’s lacrosse team, will be pairing up throughout the season to give you a view from their eyes.

Greetings to all readers who continue to read these blogs. I would like to apologize on the tardiness of this piece because of the serious schoolwork that was thrown at me last week. Therefore I was unable to get into the blogging mood/flow.

Anyways I would like to introduce you readers to my partner Marshall Johnson who is supposed to help me compose these masterpieces. A few words on Marshall, he likes to be portrayed as a very intimidating and scary man, but he really is a little softy who sleeps with his “blanky and teddy” at night and gets popped in practice by freshman TJ Neubauer. #SitMarshall

Speaking of freshman I would like to mention one of the most interesting people I have ever met, Tom Branca. Tom is a very diverse and interesting human being. When Tom isn’t playing goalie he likes posting “selfies” of himself on Facebook along with playing piano. He is a quite talented pianist with the ability to play music ranging from Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to Vanessa Carlton’s A Thousand Miles which is a wonderful tune. He will be holding frequent locker room concerts for all who are interested.

#IDon’tAlwaysListenToPianoButWhenIDoIPreferTomBranca

This past week has been quite a blur due to the lack of sleep and studying so I will try my best to give the recap of the week. We had a few players return, including Tom “The Baptist” Lukacovic and Mike “The Smartest Filmer” Roe. Welcome back to the madness men. Speaking of madness Coach Spellman made us push a sled and drag a chain 100 yards. This really showed what team was made of. I saw a few young ones turn blue in the face and shaky legs because they have never experienced the craziness that Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse endures on a daily bases, but to their credit they persevered the madness. Well Done.

Finally I would like to give a shout out to our very own Coach Lopes for managing to keep it real on a day-to-day basis. Whether it is warming up the goalies with that smooth low to high ripper or watching me suffer doing abs he always manages to keep it real. #CoachLopesIsAnAnimal

Martin Bahar’s Guiding Light

“It is not length of life, but depth of life”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Since February 9th, 2009, my family and I have had a constant day-to-day struggle understanding the meaning of the human condition. Questions of why, how, and for what cross our minds recurrently as we deal with the passing of our 25-year old beam of light, Madeleine Beverly Bahar, whose qualities of genuineness, caring, and generosity left a permanent mark on all of the lives she touched on her all-too-short stint on earth.  When you lose a loved one, in my case an older sister, there is no specific amount of time that exonerates you from the feelings of grief and sadness you experience daily, no answer for the infinite number of questions surrounding her passing, and no expressions of condolences that can bring your sister back to life.  Maddie’s time has passed and, while we know we will see her once again, it unfortunately will not be here on earth.  She rests in a better place now and, as hard as it is to cope with her passing from our perspective, we take faith knowing she no longer has to suffer.

Maddie’s legacy is one that is strong and one that transcends time. Her imprint on our world remains through the profound memories she shared with friends and family, the charitable efforts she displayed to those less fortunate over the years, and the resilience and optimism she exhibited in the most trying of times. She displayed her selflessness, grace and character during both her best of times and her worst of times, through sickness and in health.  She will always be remembered as somebody who put the well-being of others first, something not only seen through her work with Greater DC Cares and Loaves and Fishes, but also with her daily treatment of others.  Regardless of her situation, she never wanted somebody else to have a bad day.  Others always came first in Maddie’s world.

Since her passing, my family and I have taken part in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night walk.  Every year communities throughout the United States and Canada, through teams of families, friends, and co-workers, come together to raise money to bring hope to people battling blood cancers as part of a 5k walk. In 2009, our family formed Maddie’s Team and has since raised over $60,000 to support those battling blood cancers nationwide. The Light the Night walk is a terrific event to honor of Maddie, as it brings people together in an incredibly positive atmosphere and raises a substantial amount of money to help others.  The event symbolizes the altruistic manner through which Maddie lived her life and serves as a way for our family to carry on her beautiful legacy.  Information regarding our team’s fundraising efforts and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society can be found at: http://pages.lightthenight.org/nca/Montcomd12/MaddiesTeam.

One difficult thing I do occasionally is read through Maddie’s blog that she started when she entered the hospital in June 2008. It is hard not to get emotional reading it as it brings up so many memories, both good and bad, about my late sister. One consistent thing she conveys throughout her struggle is a beaming sense of optimism and grace through adversity. I encourage you to check out her blog at http://maddiebahar.blogspot.com/ to get an idea about the type of person Maddie was. It has not been updated and, likely, rarely visited by others since her passing, but it serves as an available means through which somebody can realize the type of person Maddie was without ever having met her. I hope her words can encourage all of us to dedicate or rededicate our lives to improving other people’s quality of life while we all are fortunate enough to do so.

On Deck With Cacky & Meredith

Blog Note: Cacky Keating and Meredith LaBerge are teaming up to provide a look into Fairfield Swimming & Diving for Stag Tracks this season.

Hey Stags Country!

My name is Cacky Keating and I am a senior and captain of the women’s swimming & diving team. Meredith LaBerge is a sophomore on the team as well and we will be writing to you throughout our season!

Cacky Keating

We began practices only three weeks ago but it seems like years already. We started our double practices last week, swimming both at 6am and 5pm, but this week it is already easier to get up in the morning. We are getting ready for our first meet at home on October 6 at 7pm against Boston College.

What some of you may or may not know is that although we score separately from the men’s swimming & diving team, we do everything together. Our men and women’s teams practice together in both the morning and night, and we aren’t separated by gender in the lanes either. In meets, we compete together, but, obviously during the meets, the men race the opposing men’s team, and the women race the women’s opposing team. We score separately, but each team trains and pushes each other to do their best.

Meredith LaBerge

We practice Monday through Friday, with doubles Monday through Thursday. Friday evening practices are from 4:30 to 7pm, a little longer than normal making up for not swimming in the morning.

Our head Coach is Bill Farley and he competed in the 1964 Tokyo, Japan Olympics placing fourth in the 1500-meter freestyle. Our assistant coach’s name is Jeremy Howard and he swam for the University of Kansas in his college years. We have a talented coaching staff who trains us from September to March, with our annual training trip in Hawaii every Christmas break.

This year we will be traveling to Hawaii from January 11-21, but we have to return back to school on the January 7 to train before our trip. To help pay for our trip, the Swim & Dive team teach swimming lessons to the greater Fairfield area and the funds pay for our trip.

That is all the background info we have for you now… Touch base next week!

Go Stags!

DOBO Diaries!

Their first post will serve as a little introduction to who they are and how they got here.

My name is Kelly Romano and I am the Director of Operations for the Women’s basketball team. I graduated from Fairfield in 2011 and shortly after was hired to work for the Women’s Basketball team.  My first year as a student at Fairfield was also Coach Frager and his staff’s first year.

I was fortunate enough to be a walk-on for this program and I believe what I learned from my coaches helped me a lot in school and my life.  I think it’s safe to say I am no stranger to perseverance.  I have played basketball through injuries since the spring of my junior year in high school.   I struggled with pain in my hips for a year and visited dozens of doctors before my final diagnosis was made.  The spring and summer of my senior year were spent rehabbing from bilateral hip surgery in hopes of trying out for the Fairfield Women’s basketball team.

All of my work and sacrifice paid off when that chilly September afternoon I was called into Coach Frager’s office and told the news that I was a member of the team!  After all was said and done, a head injury, another round of hip surgeries, and other bumps and bruises, I had a great experience at Fairfield and I consider myself very lucky to be in the position I am in.

I grew up just down the road in Westport, Conn, and currently reside in Fairfield just minutes away from campus.  My sister is a junior here at Fairfield and I take full advantage of this by bugging her every chance I get!  I’m not die-hard sports fan like Kyle but I own a Met’s hat and I am a Giants fan (fun fact: my brother played football at Bridgton Academy with Victor Cruz!).  I mostly am a Fairfield Stags fan, I grew up coming to these games and I continue to attend as many Stags games as I can.

In my free time I usually get dragged to do “fun activities” with my roommates, Athletics Communications graduate assistant (GA) Sarah Minice and Softball GA Laura Valentino.  These activities include baseball games, karaoke Thursdays, and the occasional paintballing excursions.  However, the real fun starts October 3rd, which is when we have our first practice!  I look forward to blogging about our season and giving everyone a little taste of what a “DOBO” does.

And now, here is my co-author Kyle!

Hello there! My name is Kyle Koncz, the Director of Basketball Operations for the Fairfield Men’s Basketball Team.  I’ll stop right there, because you are probably asking yourself what exactly does a Director of Basketball Operations do? Well that’s what I am here to answer.  Throughout the year I will be writing a series of posts to give you an inside look into what I do on a day to day basis to help everything run smoothly for our Stags Men’s Basketball Program.

To start you off I’ll let you know that my position in the college basketball world is called the DOBO, because who really wants to repeat the actual name over and over again, and as the DOBO I am in charge of a lot. By the end of the season I can guarantee you will have a little better idea of the behind the scenes action of our program.

I’ll get into the meat of my job in later posts, but it probably would be good to give you a little background of myself first. I was born and raised in good ole Cleveland, Ohio. The Mistake by the Lake some call it, but I like to refer to it as the Gem of the Midwest. I am a huge Cleveland sports fan, and can’t wait to celebrate our city’s first professional championship. My dream would be a Super Bowl title for the Browns! I know I coach basketball, but Cleveland always has and will be a Browns town. I played basketball at Princeton, and played for Coach Johnson my senior year. Last year I had the opportunity to coach at Williams College, and I came to Fairfield in the beginning of May, very excited to do all I can to help continue the success of the program!

I look forward to keeping you updated throughout the season and giving you a great feel for what we do. If nothing else it will allow you tag along on my ongoing quest to beat Assistant Coach Martin Bahar in tennis.
