Deep Thoughts From Carl-Shanigans

Blog Note: Carly Beyar and Shannon Fay are junior members of the women’s soccer team.  They will be teaming up to provide a Stag soccer point of view to Stag Tracks.

Hello friends,

Most people may know us as, Carly Beyar and Shannon Fay, however we would like to combine ourselves into the Carl-Shanigans. We are both juniors and members of the Fairfield Women’s Soccer team. Although our lives are completely absorbed with soccer practices and games, there is more to us than you may think.

September 7th, 2012 we played Hartford on Lessing Field and unfortunately ended up in a double overtime…TIE. Ties are the worst part of soccer in our eyes. However, our Coach Jimbo [head coach Jim O'Brien] was there to cheer us up after the game. He informed us that the men’s and women’s soccer teams were to be represented at Late-Night Barone around 10 pm that night.

We are not sure if you have ever heard of Late-Night at Barone, but it is infamously known for the most unhealthy food that could instantly make you the happiest person in the world. And if you know our team, you know we love food! You’ve got choices of bacon, egg and cheese, or chicken fingers, greasy pizza or even slushy cones (naturally having 2 or 3 them, but who’s keeping track?). Our team headed over around 10 o’clock PM and were the first on line (Shocker, we are always hungry).

The cafeteria was decorated with streamers and there were even custom made water bottles with soccer balls as caps. Not only did our team eat until we felt we were going to explode, but we also held the freeze dance competition in the middle of the cafeteria. Unfortunately shy faces didn’t want to come and dance, but our teammates danced enough for all of the guests at Late-Night. We had tons of laughs inside of our dance circle. Evidently, it was a great bonding experience for everyone, including the freshman who are still warming up to the upper class-man on our squad.

After going home late, we had to set our alarms to 8:30 AM. Normally it would be for a practice, however that day was different. Our team had decided to host a clinic called, “Mini Stags” for six weeks. Every Saturday for six weeks, 147 three and four-year-olds will come train with the Fairfield Women’s Soccer team.

Last Saturday was the first day so naturally we ran the registration and began to play games with our designated groups. We played with the mini stags for an hour playing games like, Duck Duck Goose, Red Light Green Light, Sharks and Minos, and of course a full-field scrimmage (Which was very difficult to control considering they are three years old), but we managed to be successful. The kids were laughing and enjoying themselves, as well as the parents who were carefully watching our every move on the sidelines. Incorporating the soccer ball into the drills was a challenge but we actually taught some children how to dribble the ball and shoot into a net. “No hands!” was repeated numerous times, but we hope to think that the children eventually got the point.

What we had thought would be a chore for the next six Saturday mornings actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The kids help us remember why we play the game we love, which is simply to be yourself and have fun. Sometimes with the pressures of college, we forget that soccer is about enjoying yourself and working as hard as you can to achieve a common goal. It is a blessing to be apart of teaching young kids to love the same game that we do. (Not to mention, we are making great babysitting contacts).

Well, that’s all we have to share right now! Stay tuned for more shenanigans that we might get into next….

xoxo,

Carl-Shanigans

At The Net With Lindsay Weaver

The Fairfield Stags Volleyball team is headed to Siena and Iona this week to see if they can follow suit to their two wins over St. Peter’s and Manhattan last weekend. MAAC play has officially started and we are all so excited to get this part of the season underway. Last year, we came so incredibly close to winning our conference, and this year, that is our fuel to come out on top. Especially because we will be hosting this year’s MAAC Tournament at Fairfield!!

This week we are going to Siena on Wednesday night and Iona on Friday night. The road trips can get a little tiresome. For example, Siena is about two and a half hours away. To add to that, we have 12 people on our team, not including coaches, and we are a volleyball team, so the majority of us are above-average in height. Then you add two vans to the mix and our bodies get a little cramped. However, it is always well worth the trip to be able to play the sport we all love, and hopefully can come home with a win.

Like any team, there is always someone rehabbing from injury, myself included. I was just released to be able to play without a wrap around my leg, which was very exciting news. It’s always extremely difficult for an athlete to have to rehab an injury, especially when we aren’t cleared to play at all. No athlete wants to sit in a rehab room and ice for three hours while your teammates are practicing. But, almost all of us have been there and we do the best we can to come back as quick as possible.

Even when injury strikes, we strive to stay strong as a team and as players. There is nothing more that we want during season then to end up in the top four so that we can battle it out for conference champion.

Good luck to the rest of the fall athletes in their competitions for the next couple of weeks. GO STAGS!!!

Keeping Up The Chase

Blog Note: Greg Chase is a senior on the men’s cross country team. When not running for the Stags, Greg is involved in numerous campus organizations and community service activities. You can keep up with him all season long on StagTracks.

I’m happy to say that the team has just returned from a successful trip down to Van Cortlandt Park at the Iona Meet of Champions where junior teammate Howie Rosas set the school record with a time of 25:59.99 for the course’s 8k race.

My performance was sub-par for my standards, but the good thing about being on a team is that even with a bad personal performance, I was able to be happy for the team and the other members’ individual successes. I think that you can’t dwell on performances because it’s in the past. Good performance or bad, you have to keep working hard and looking to improve; which is exactly what I want to do!

Last year I had my first healthy cross country season as I have been battling serious and chronic groin injuries since my junior year of high school. But once the spring season came I found myself plagued yet again as I had a staph infection in my calf. Once again I moved forward with high hopes and determination and made sure I did what I could to stay in running-fit.

That’s what you realize as an athlete is that you have to take care of the little things and that’s what I will be doing all this week as we prepare for our first home meet – the Fr. Victor F. Leeber Invitational. It’s going to be a big meet for us because we are planning for a major student turn out as we have invited tons of friends through campus posters and, of course, social networking. But we also plan to have some faculty come to cheer us on as well as our families. Fellow teammate Kyle Short is going to be running in front of his parents who are making the trip all the way from the great state of Arizona.

Obviously, we want to make all of our friends and family proud but even more so because this year the Stags will be running in pink as a tribute to our dedication to support breast cancer research and to support those who have to battle the tragic disease every day. (Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink For the Cure® is the fundraiser, check out the Stags’ team page)

This race means a lot to me especially because it’s my senior year. And so, if two or three ice baths are needed to stay in top-shape then I guess I can freeze with a smile – or try to – because the Stags and I want to bring home the gold and racing at home makes it that more important for us to win for our friends and family.

If you want to come and support us, the Leeber Invitational starts at 11am this Saturday near the track at Lessing Field.

GO STAGS!!

On Thursday, the Fairfield Field Hockey team and I took our season first cross-country trip to Michigan and opened with a contest against St. Louis. With a goal by Nikki McLucas, we edged St. Louis 1-0 to win our first match of the tournament. After a family tailgate with our most dedicated fans, our team prepared for a day that allowed us to experience the atmosphere of a Big 10 college campus. The day, of course, started with a training session that focused solely on the elements needed to compete against Michigan on Sunday. We then were able to get a glimpse of the competition while watching the match up of St. Louis and Michigan, a game that ended with a 6-2 Michigan victory. With the scouting complete, the team and I moved on to one of our most exciting aspects of the trip – a University of Michigan football game. For us, simply walking through the town of Ann Arbor on game day was an experience similar to culture shock. The entire town was clad in yellow and navy blue-and that is not an exaggeration. It was obvious we were outsiders until we, for the day, took on the persona of a Michigan undergrad and bought shirts, hats and programs to show our faux school spirit. It was shocking to walk into a stadium that held over 100,000 fans to watch a college team play. Coming from a small private school without a football program, we were in a completely different atmosphere – not to say that we in any way lack school pride. It was just the sheer number of people that came out to see this game that awed us all. But I believe we were all humbled by this experience as we stowed our Michigan attire to take on our biggest opponent thus far on Sunday afternoon.  Unfortunately, the match ended with a 5-0 loss to Michigan-although we were never counted out of the game. We are now looking to improve as we move into our last week before conference play that begins with our competition against Holy Cross on Thursday at 4 PM. We still have a lot to prove to show why we are deservedly ranked #23-as the entire audience at U-of-M now know:

More Max

Blog Note: Max Buchanan is a sophomore defender with the Stags lacrosse team. He will be writing throughout the year about his life as a Fairfield student-athlete.

Seasonal greetings to all, my name is Max Buchanan and I will be writing to all of you followers through the Fairfield Men’s Lacrosse blog about everyday experiences.

First order of business is to welcome our transfers. We have added two stellar student athletes, Tobias Armour and Griff McGoldrick. Even though I haven’t talked to Griff I would like to welcome him via this blog. Also I would like to take the time to tell Tobias that he has one of the coolest names because it means “Yahweh is good” in Greek.

Now we must talk about move in day. By Monday afternoon I was ecstatic to be back on campus because the grass looked well groomed along with Nick Guida’s stellar haircut. The dorm upgrade was very nice as well, because my fellow mates and I have air conditioning along with our own personal bathroom that smells like roses. Even though move in day was physically exhausting hauling up elements of clothing and televisions, there was a looming thought on my mind, the run test.

The run test was a surprise for all, which ended up being four 300 yard shuttles. This gave me serious anxiety because 300s are not only physically enduring on the legs and lungs, they are also mentally exhausting because they are absolutely crazy. Even though I did not make every time, I would call it a success because I lived to see another day at Fairfield University and to crush the lift test. Which is exactly what I did readers even with a rocky start to the day. I ended up putting up 260 pounds four times on the bench and feelings absolutely swollen and satisfied after my performance in the weight room.

After a long and physically enduring week it feels good to sleep in Saturday and Sunday along with opportunity to mentally prepare for the Mike Roe vs. Coach Copelan scrimmage occurring Monday morning at 7 a.m. I encourage all students and faculty to come out and watch Mike Roe’s team beat Coach Copelan’s in a friendly yet aggressive contest.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to writing for you again soon.

 Welcome Back Stags!

With the first week of school under our belts, the 2012-13 school year is off and running. This past week was a busy one, with all of our students moving back on campus, starting classes, seeing friends, and of course our Fall Compliance meetings.

Despite all of the preparation and paperwork that go into these meetings, they truly are one of my favorite things about the new year because I get to see all of my student-athletes in one day! We took a different approach to our meeting set up this year by allowing our student-athletes to complete their NCAA paperwork online. I was a little skeptical at first because I wasn’t sure how many student-athletes check their school emails during the summer. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that before I started my meetings for the day, there were only six kids who had not done them. 416 out of 422 ain’t bad!!

As usual we held our meetings in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room so we could accommodate the large number of student-athletes we had for each meeting. We made our meetings more conversational this year, as our student-athletes were addressed by a number of athletic department reps. Athletics Director Gene Doris welcomed our students back by congratulating them on a successful 2011-12 that was capped off by winning the Commissioners Cup. Our Senior Woman Administrator Alison Sexton covered student-athlete welfare issues and tossed out her “free money” ploy to the Student Assistance Fund. Our Faculty Athletic Representative, Dr. Chris Huntley spoke to our students about his role and his continued involvement to be an advocate for student-athletes. He also talked about his idea of “bring your coach to class day,” which he feels would be a great opportunity to interact with the world of academia, but also continue to show our coaches the hard work these student-athletes give day in and day out.

Finally to round out the night, I spoke to our student-athletes about numerous Compliance topics. I also got to express to them the great opportunity they have at Fairfield University to get a great education and compete on the highest level. I commend our coaching staffs and student athletes for their patience and participation in these meetings. It’s the first step in the success we have in store for the year!  GO STAGS!!

Staff Softball – Brzezinski Style

Blog Note: Julie Brezeninski is the Stags softball coach and was one of the key organizers of the staff softball team. All rules for staff games are approved by her.

A great way to start of the new academic calendar year in the athletic department is with a little competition.  With that being said the Fairfield University athletic department enjoyed an afternoon out on the softball field to get the competitive juices going, following the year opening department staff meeting.

After a lunch catered by Garden Catering to get going, and celebrate the Stags 2011-12 MAAC Commissioner Cup Championship, it was game time. Joe Klauder headed things up by having the numbers in a hat ready to be picked, and I got the field and rules going for the game.  Biggest rule change- only one homerun per inning per team will count, the rest are outs.

Right from the start we could see it was going to be Jack Jones’ day on team Red.    He was stellar on the mound holding the opposition to only two runs in the first two innings.  The lone highlight was a two run bomb over the right field fence by Coach Bill Currier in the early part of the game.  Jones was the Team Red run producer, launching not one but two missiles over the left field fence, as well as another double in the gap for a total of five RBI on the day.

The Red team built up a solid 12-3 lead by the 4th inning but then all the screws started to come undone.  Sloppy defense by Red followed by timely hitting on the White team formed a comeback in the making.  Coach Tyson Wheeler followed up Coach Kevin Conry’s homer with a three-run shot of his own, which was disallowed due to the aforementioned rule change.  The White team led by Wheelers strong defense and Joey Civico display of “I don’t need a glove” mentality got them back in the game and closed the gap to 15-11 heading into the last inning.

The White team held the Red team scoreless and was again on the prowl for a comeback in their final at bat.  Again, sloppy defense go the runners on early. The red team did all they could but were unable to hold off team White.  In dramatic fashion the final run was scored by Coach Kelly Romano as she slid under the tag of Chris O’Connor for the final tying run.  The game ended in a tie as the teams were wearing down.  The unanimous MVP of the game was Jones as he led his team to a stunning tie.

It was a great way to kick-off the season – having lunch together and enjoying a great sunny summer afternoon on the diamond.  It is back to the grind now, with a full slate of games for our athletic teams.  I am looking forward to seeing how the coming campaign unfolds and hope to see you all out at the games soon.

Parent Trap – Stags Style

Shannon Fay is a junior forward with the Fairfield women’s soccer team. She talks about the squad’s training trip the first week of preseason to New Hampshire.

Preseason is a time for our team to bond, with new faces joining us and rekindling friendships with old teammates. After the nerve racking emotions that come with fitness testing, we were fortunate to have time to build our team togetherness by traveling to Camp Merriwood, in New Hampshire. It was the real life “Parent Trap” camp, with all the activities that included archery, rock climbing, badminton as well as all the water sports. There was also the camaraderie displayed in the dining hall as well as all the laughs in our cabins.

I was so pumped to ring the dinner bell that announced it was time for us to head to the dining hall. We ate with the Boston University team and coaches and had all kinds of great home cooked foods with bread pudding being my personal favorite.

After practice and a night swim in the lake, Jimbo [Stags head coach Jim O’Brien] made a sweet bonfire and we all told some ghost stories. Each story was pretty good but Guti had some of the best. (Next year we will remember to bring the s’mores). The cabins were hilarious because we all forgot blankets and the beds were squeaking but it was nice to sleep somewhere other than Jouges.

The next morning we began our day with another awesome meal, had a walk through and got some time to ourselves to swim in the lake and relax. We were all sad leaving Camp Merriwood but were in a great mood heading to the game. The upbeat feeling continued during our play against BU and we were able to come out with a win in our first scrimmage.

Overall, I am glad we had a nice break away from campus and were able to come together, enjoy ourselves and start the season on a real positive note. I hope we get to go back next year!

The Other Things We Do – NCAA Committee Work

I recently returned from my summer meeting as a member of the NCAA Division I softball committee.  This meeting was my final responsibility (other than reviewing championship manuals) of my four-year term on the 10-member committee.

During those few days in July, we spent time reviewing the 2012 championship including the input from the softball coaches association and ESPN.  Our group reviewed the factors of the RPI and how those adjustments would have affected this year’s teams.  While we spent a lot of time with this review, we acknowledge that the RPI will just get the team on the board.  Our committee spends hours breaking down each team’s entire body of work to see which teams should get into the championships or become one of the 16 seeded teams.

Spending the past four years as a member of a sport committee has been a tremendous experience.  It’s a great chance to work with your peers and the NCAA staff in running a championship .  The spring includes bi-weekly ranking conference calls, a weekend of selecting and seeding the 64 team championship, representing the committee as a site rep at a regional or Super regional and culminating with about eight days in Oklahoma City (OKC) at the College World Series (CWS).

At Fairfield, we have had the experience of hosting NCAA events, and through that you really appreciate all of the people, particularly your local volunteers who give so much of their time to make the championship successful.  The experience of getting to know the volunteers from OKC and seeing the pride they have in the CWS was one of the highlights for me.  While the time away from the office was often a challenge to balance both roles, I am tremendously appreciative of this opportunity.

Earlier this summer, my term on the NCAA’s Recruiting/Personnel Cabinet also came to an end.  During my time on this Cabinet, we spent time researching, reviewing and developing legislation for the membership on Recruiting and personnel issues, particularly those that deal with the ever changing role of technology.  My participation was certainly useful in staying engaged with the NCAA’s governance process.  In the end, I think we all like the competition and the interaction with student-athletes which is what makes participation on a sport committee so rewarding.

While the summer goes really quick, it does bring about an exciting time with all the fall teams coming back to get ready for their seasons.  Go Stags!

Michael O’Keeffe – Olympic Blog

A photo of the pitch in Japan where Michael O'Keeffe received his first U23 international 'cap'.

Olympic Blog – Welcome To London!

Our tour of Asia is complete and we are rewarded with one day to soak up the Olympic village before we head to Austria for our final warm-up match.

Despite a 2-1 loss to Korea Republic, it was an improved performance from the Japan game as we continue to get used to each other and the style of play we have adopted.

The feeling amongst the team on the field is growing in confidence as we are beginning to become more comfortable with each other and understand combinations up and down the pitch.

That confidence on the field transpires off the field also, with a bit more banter flying around at the dinner table.

Our first taste of the Olympics was yesterday as we arrived to the Olympic village for a day off training to relax our bodies and soak up the atmosphere.

Although there were not a lot of athletes here yet, going into the Olympic dining hall (where the McDonalds is free!) and arriving to New Zealand’s building, welcomed by a haka [a version of the traditional haka performed by sports teams, especially the New Zealand rugby team], was an extremely proud feeling.

Knowing that you are now part of a small group of athletes (a little over 1000) to represent New Zealand at an Olympic games and be part of such a prestigious club is very humbling.

We were officially welcomed by the chief de commission Dave Currie and presented with our own pounamu – a greenstone native to New Zealand.

Following the official welcome and tour of the building came the time that every athlete looks forward to – kit allocation.

I was 5 years old again and it was Christmas as we got into our huge bag full of gear. Shirts, shorts, tracksuits, jerseys, jandals [a trademark for an open sandal that has a narrow strap between the big toe and the other toes], shoes, speakers, hats, singlets, the works; no matter how old you get, kit-day is always the most exciting.

We are just hanging around the village today, looking at some of the stadiums, a bit of shopping at the Westfield Mall, and trying to stay away from the ever so tempting McDonalds.

We leave for Austria tomorrow for one final game against the United Arab Emirates, before we head to Coventry where we will be based for a week and with the arrival of recent All-White captain Tommy Smith, the team is complete and rearing to go.

Let the Games begin!

Cheers,

Michael O’Keeffe
