Men’s Basketball Defeats Saint Peter’s To Advance In MAAC Tourney

The men’s basketball team advanced to the MAAC Tournament quarterfinals with a 54-47 win over Saint Peter’s University. The Stags will play second-seeded Rider University in the next round. The game will tip-off at 7:30 pm on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

Derek Needham scored a game-high 24 points in the victory, netting four three pointers and eight field goals overall. Amadou Sidibe tied his career-high with 13 rebounds and added six points with a pair of steals. Colin Nickerson played a solid defensive game with three steals.

Fairfield erased a seven-point deficit in the second half by going on a 15-2 run that enabled the Stags to gain control of the game. Saint Peter’s made just one of 13 field goal attempts during that run.

Men’s Basketball Begins MAAC Tournament Play Tonight

The men’s basketball team opens up play in the 2013 MAAC Basketball Championship this evening, taking on Saint Peter’s University at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The game is scheduled for a 9:30 pm tip.

Seniors Derek Needham, Colin Nickerson, and Desmond Wade will lead the Stags tonight as Fairfield and Saint Peter’s will meet for the third time this year. The Stags won the first two meetings by 61-54 and 61-44 scores. This will mark the ninth time that these two teams have met in the MAAC tournament with each team winning four games in the series history.

Women’s Basketball Edged By Siena In MAAC Quarterfinals

The women’s basketball team came up short in the MAAC Quarterfinals this afternoon as the Stags fell to Siena College by a 52-48 margin at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. Alexys Vazquez led all Fairfield scorers with 15 points, while Brittany Obi-Tabot completed a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Cizynski also reached double figures with 14 points.

The Stags trailed by eight with three minutes to go but made a valiant comeback bid. A layup from Obi-Tabot closed the gap to six points with 1:59 remaining. Vazquez made it a one-possession game with a three pointer at the one-minute mark at 51-48. The Stags could not muster the tying points in the closing seconds though and Siena iced the game with one second left by making a free throw.
