Stags Will Play On Sunday After Quarterfinal Win Over Rider

The men’s basketball team knocked off second-seeded Rider University, 43-42, this evening in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Championship at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. Senior Derek Needham tallied a game-high 19 points and hit crucial free throws down the stretch to propel the Stags into the semifinals. Maurice Barrow, the MAAC Sixth Player of the Year, chipped in with nine points and five boards while senior Colin Nickerson added seven rebounds and five points.The entire game was a defensive battle with neither team leading by more than four points at any point. Rookie Coleman Johnson hit a jumper in the lane to pull the Stags within 34-32 with just under five minutes left in the game. Needham then gave Fairfield the 35-34 lead with a three-pointer at 3:40 while Barrow hit a pair of free throws 34 seconds later to cap off the 7-0 run. After Rider made it a one-point game in the closing minute, Needham netted a pair of free throws with 37.1 seconds left to give Fairfield the 39-36 advantage. Needham would hit four more free throws in the final 19 seconds of the game to preserve the win for Fairfield.Fairfield will face #6 Manhattan contest in the MAAC Championship semifinals on Sunday, March 10 at 4:30pm live on ESPN3.
