Prof. David Downie and Senior Alexandra Gross published in AJCU’s Connections
Submitted by Lisa Calderone MFA '11 on April 27, 2009Care of the Person, and of the Natural World, at Fairfield University, an article written by David Downie, Ph.D., director of the Program on the Environment, and senior Alexandra Gross, was recently published in Connections, a publication of the Association of Jesuit College & Universities (AJCU). Dr. Downie and Ms. Gross reported on the sustainability initiatives at Fairfield that are accelerating along three broad fronts:
- Curriculum expansion
- Campus infrastructure and pollution reduction
- Student life
Referring to the new Jesuit residence that broke ground on Earth Day, April 28, 2008, the authors write, “The new residence, which is now nearing completion, features a comprehensive geothermal heating and cooling system, a solar-absorbing “green” plant roof and the use of recycled building materials … Beyond the new Jesuit Residence, many other infrastructure, conservation and pollution reduction projects are reducing Fairfield University’s ecological footprint while also providing educational and economic returns. ”
