On Thursday, February 25, Fairfield University welcomed Mary Karr, esteemed memoirist and award-winning poet, to promote Lit, the long-awaited sequel to her New York Times best-selling memoirs The Liar’s Club and Cherry.
The event, which took place in the BCC Oak room from 7 to 9 p.m., drew a large crowd of members from the Fairfield community, as well as students and faculty from the University. Ms. Karr was brought to Fairfield for the evening as part of the University’s Inspire the Writer Within series taking place on campus this spring. The discussion was followed by a book signing.
Ms. Karr gave a welcome and warm talk on her newest memoir, and encouraged the audience to participate in the discussion, using her confidence, sense of humor, and powerful sense of self to dazzle the crowd. Lit, which tells the story of her descent into alcoholism and subsequent resurrection and coming to terms with her Christian faith, was the topic of conversation for the night, and by the time the questions from the audience came around, many spoke up about their own struggles with writing, coming to terms with these struggles, and finding the strength to get their own stories out into the world. Audience members were able to leave with a better understanding of Ms. Karr and her life, and the encouragement to try memoir writing out for themselves.
