The Irish Studies Department held the first “Galway Gathering” on Monday, September 20th, from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Levee. This event was intended to welcome students back from either the spring or summer study abroad session. It was also an opportunity for students who are interested in the Galway program to hear about the experience from their peers. Live music was provided by the Shamrouges, a local band that play authentic Irish music.
Dr. Cassidy, the director of Irish Studies, started off the event by discussing the merits of the Irish Studies minor. He stated that the minor will enhance a student’s résumé and will often be a conversation piece during interviews. Afterwards, many returning students shared their experiences abroad to a captivated audience of students planning their Galway trips. Brochures were distributed and many students signed up for the mailing list.
The Irish Studies Department will also be hosting multiple events throughout the semester. An upcoming event is the Annual Irish Film Series. The first movie for this year is “Five Minutes of Heaven,” which will be held at the DiMenna-Nyselius Library on Wednesday, October 6th at 7 p.m. A different film will be showed every 2 weeks. The list of movies are:
