The School of Business Launches a Second Sophomore Symposium for the Class of 2013

The Charles F. Dolan School of Business has traditionally offered a Sophomore Symposium during fall semester to help students navigate their college career successfully. This year, a second Sophomore Symposium will be offered in the spring to complement this academic kick-off event. While Sophomore Symposium I provides business students with an overview of academic programs and co-curricular learning opportunities, Sophomore Symposium II will provide an overview of professional skills development and career preparation.

This year, Sophomore Symposium II will feature a career preparation panel of Dolan School of Business Advisory Council Members and alumni, including:

Elaine Hughes – Moderator / DSB Advisory Council
President, EA Hughes & Co.

Elaine Hughes, after graduating from Hunter College with a degree in Art and Education, was hired in 1976 by Springs Industries in an industry-setting precedent as the first female account executive in the Company’s apparel fabrics division. Springs also sponsored Elaine toward her MBA degree which she received in 1980 from Sacred Heart University. She went on to marketing positions in the textile industry with Malden Mills and Blue Ridge Winkler textiles. In 1991, after her term as partner in the executive search firm of Bader Hartley, Elaine founded E.A. Hughes & Company.

Elaine was named Entrepreneurial Woman of the Year in 1996 by the Fairfield County Girl Scout Council. She is a three-term board member of Women in Management, where she initiated two programs: the WIM Scholarship Fund which offers financial assistance to women who are attending college, working and raising families, and the WIM Mentorship Program, which assists high school teenagers with positive role models from business.

She is also a founding member of the New York Textile Group formerly known as the New York Textile Board of Trade.

Elaine has also been the featured speaker at Fairfield University’s Board of Directors meetings where she has spoken on the importance of internship programs and entitlements.

Chris Desmarais ’93 – DSB Advisory Council
Managing Director, GAMCO Asset Management

Chris DesMarais is a Managing Director of GAMCO Asset Management Inc. as well as the Director of Socially Responsive Investments. In addition to being the co-portfolio manager of The Gabelli SRI Green Fund – an open-end mutual fund adhering to social and environmental guidelines, Chris’ responsibilities involve marketing and client service of GAMCO’s Value, Growth, and International capabilities for institutional, endowment, and family office clients as well as direct oversight of all of the firm’s SRI equity products. Since joining GAMCO in 1993, Chris has been actively involved in expanding the firm’s capabilities and involvement in the field of Socially Responsive Investing. Chris serves as the Chairman of the Charles F. Dolan School of Business Advisory Council at Fairfield University and has been a frequent speaker at various national and regional SRI conferences. Chris is a graduate of Fairfield University with a B.A. in economics.

Alison Miller ‘06
Business Analyst, UBS

Alison Miller graduated from Fairfield in 2006 with a double major in Finance and Information Systems with a minor in accounting. Alison started working with UBS Investment Bank in July 2006 as a Business Analyst within Fixed Income IT and has worked various projects to support the implementation of new business and market initiatives within Fixed Income, particularly for the Credit Default Swap trading desk. Alison transitioned to Operations in February 2010 to gain a broader view of Investment Banking through exposure to other businesses and functional areas. Alison’s current role is to support the Confirmations and Settlements functions within Operations for new business and industry initiatives. In her spare time, Alison enjoys running and has completed three marathons.

Joseph LaCroix ‘08
Integrated Media Strategist, PHD Media

Joseph graduated from Fairfield University in May, 2008 and immediately relocated to Miami, Florida to begin a career in advertising. Joseph joined Crispin Porter + Bogusky as an Assistant Media Planner where he worked on Burger King and Domino’s.  Joseph has since moved to New York to join Ogilvy as a Media Planner and presently is with PHD Media, an Omnicom company, where he ism a Strategist, similar to a Media Planner, working on Hyatt Hotels and GSK brands.  Originally from the suburbs of Boston, MA, Joseph enjoys traveling, music, and trying new things.  While at Fairfield, Joseph attended the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China, where he traveled the Silk Road for three weeks, interned for an Omnicom public relations firm, and completed several classes.

Stephanie Stadig ‘10
Goldman Sachs Financial Analyst- Controllers, Private Equity Group

Stephanie, a native of Shrewsbury, MA, is a 2010 graduate of Fairfield University. Stephanie was a finance major, economics minor while at Fairfield and was involved in the Student Managed Investment Fund and Dean’s Student Advisory Roundtable. Stephanie currently works for Goldman Sachs in their Controllers group where she specializes in financial reporting and liquidity of the firm’s private equity funds. She resides in Hoboken, NJ.  During her time at Fairfield, Stephanie was an intern at General Electric, State Street, and Northwestern Mutual.

Emmanuel Ephie ‘10
Goldman Sachs, Investment Management Division, IMD Finance and Strategy Team

Emmanuel Ephie was born in Nigeria and moved to the United States in 1996. He attended public school in Bridgeport and graduated from Fairfield University’s Dolan School of Business in 2010 with a double major in Finance and Accounting. He currently works at Goldman Sachs, within the Investment Management Division.

Andy Pezzino, MBA ‘09
Manager Business Analysis, Eastern Region, Cartus

Andy Pezzino joined Cartus in 2005 as an International Compensation Analyst.  Within the International Compensation department his largest role was administration of the APAC and EMEA global payrolls for a large global client which included oversight of over 200 expatriates.  Andy has been a part of the International Client Services Department since June of 2007 when he took the position of Senior Expatriate Assignment Consultant.  In this role he was responsible for serving multiple clients and took all VIP files for a Fortune 250 firm.  While in this role Andy was also selected by the company for two extended business trips, one in Asia and one in Europe, and brings a truly global experience to any role.   In Andy’s current role of Manager of Business Analysis he reports directly to the Senior Vice President/General Manager of the Eastern Region and is responsible for providing trend reporting and analytical support for over 500 clients which helps the SVP/GM manage the Operation and Account Management business.  Within this role Andy is involved in a variety of cross functional project teams focused on improving productivity and looking for business process improvements.  Andy also has a dotted line reporting relationship to ten network business analysts in the region and is responsible for training, coaching, and developing their technical skills and knowledge of Cartus financial processes. Andy holds a B.S. from the University of Connecticut with a major in Finance and also holds an M.B.A. from Fairfield University with a concentration in International Business.
