Fairfield students and faculty joined the Asian Club’s celebration of the Chinese New Year on Friday, March 4 in the BCC Oak room. The event, which was $5 at the door and included Chinese buffet style dinner as well as raffle prizes, was held by the Asian Student Association to represent Asian cultures here on campus, and attracted a variety of people from the community who came to learn more about the Chinese New Year and participate in the fun of the evening.
Students from the Shaolin Wushu Center of Martial Arts, located in South Windsor, Conn., came to the event to perform various choreographed martial arts. Students ranged in age from 6 years old to over 60, and each stood to present their performance in front of the crowd of onlookers.
The performances were impressive, with kids as young as 6 performing complicated choreographed fights to masters performing physically taxing and difficult moves with swords. It was quite the opportunity to see these performances live, and a dynamic way to celebrate the New Year.
