studio art @ fairfield – a defining time in my career

The most inspiring and lasting memories of my experience at Fairfield were those created during my time in the Studio Arts Program. While studying, I was able to have my first exhibit in New Haven, Conn., master the art of plein air painting around campus, and intern as a senior for a New York based landscape painter in her Long Island City studio. With Studio Art as my minor, I was able to first “define” myself as an artist – preparing me with the skills, techniques, and confidence to continue to practice and evolve as the painter I am today. I knew after my four years at Fairfield that I had not only built on my talents and created a strong portfolio, but had grown to better understand what it meant to be a practicing, career painter.

faculty mentorship

The professors at Fairfield were a wealth of information and inspiration to me. I was lucky to have Suzanne Chamlin not only as my art professor, but as my mentor – which still holds true in my life today. She embraced having students of different majors in her painting courses, and regardless of their level of experience or talent, made everyone feel comfortable creating and sharing their art with the class.

lasting legacy @ fairfield

I think back fondly on my time at Fairfield, and realize that my liberal arts education has served as the perfect springboard to preparing me for life’s many challenges, through the emphasis on rigorous academics and strong Jesuit values.
